The Golden Age of Science

The Steam Elephants roleplaying game

Although practically it may have started earlier, the Golden Age of Science is often said to have begun in 1859, the year of majority of King Edward I and VII. Initially under the influence of Prince Regent Albert, and then increasingly in his own right, the young king became a great sponsor and supporter of scientific development, with his enthusiasm also encouraging the investment of others.

It was the same year that Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, and was pleased to announce that the King and Prince Regent Albert had accepted his invitation to join the Lunar Society of Birmingham.

After more than 40 years of this Golden Age the achievements are vast, but more continue to be made and the dawn of the new century heralds a New Age of Science, surely even greater than the one before.
