The art of the projecting kinetoscope[1]

The latest wonder of the modern age is the combination of the Kinetograph, a marvellous camera, firstly with the mechanical Kinetoscope in which flip-card motion could be privately viewed and then, most thrillingly, the Projecting Kinetoscope, a novel development of the magic lantern that allows theatre audiences to watch moving images.

The Kinetograph can naturally capture photographic images true to life, and it is arguable that the selection of these images for the greatest effect could itself be considered an art, but further wonders can be interjected by the auteurs of the Kinetoscope.

In the mysterious world between the Kinetograph and the Kinetoscope, the arts of the magician and painter may be combined to produce marvellous productions seldom rivalled by humdrum reality; in which man may visit the moon, an artist may inhabit his art, a King may rescue his Queen from Fairyland via Neptune's kingdom and a sojourn in the belly of a whale, and even an extinct dinosaurus may be brought most convincingly to life.

Is there an art of the projecting kinetoscope?

Le Voyage à travers l'impossible

Although it may be a new and collaborative art, and subject to critics who believe it more akin to the music hall than the finer arts, most are agreed that there is indeed an art of the kinetoscope, and it becomes particularly difficult to deny when renowned playwrights, artists and costumiers are drawn to participate with the most successful kinetographers.

Following Impressionism, and the resulting movements in the art world away from the literal portrayal of reality, many have seized upon the opportunity to advance this still further through the kinetoscope's ability not only to bring art to life, but to present them widely to a paying public. For artists whose visions were previously frequently confined to their garret and a discerning but small audience, this seems to have exerted a particular appeal.
